The Teenagers of the Never Again Movement
What began as typical performative media around a mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida last month — Wait at these aroused, grief-stricken kids! — turned into a thunderstorm of youth voices no one anticipated. Many adults dismissed it, merely high schoolhouse students beyond the country heard the call, held up their online megaphones, and took their phones to the streets on March xiv. The Parkland shooting uncovered a thriving generation of youth activists (sometimes dubbed the "hashtag generation," or "slacktivists"), who are done with existence underestimated and willfully misunderstood by adults. I personally go to a individual schoolhouse, just I went to a public school till sophomore year. Talking to my public school friends, they flinch at every alert that goes off, every sound… they're scared. I wish adults actually understood that they had the run a risk to go to school. They had the chance to graduate. We care because a lot of students feel like they might non even become that risk.
I offset heard about the Parkland shooting by seeing the videos those students posted on social media — on Snapchat, online. I was literally in tears. It was so disturbing and at the same time so real. I decided I wanted to practice a protest. It was originally simply for people in my community, but then I talked to some other schools. Normally there is like a huge carve up between private and public schools in Baltimore, with some anger towards each other. This was the outset fourth dimension it seemed like we wanted to work together, without any administrative back up. So on the day of the protest nosotros all gathered, and more than and more than people started piling in. Later on only 10 minutes 200 students had shown up. It was massive.
The mayor of Baltimore came to the march. She wasn't actually invited. She spoke nigh how she's going to ship buses downwardly to the DC march. This movement is special because this issue concerns students and children. We are both the victims and the perpetrators of the crime. Students are the ones committing school shootings, but students are also the ones dying. That'southward what I wish adults understood, considering a lot of adults don't like the fact that students are taking matters into their ain easily and stepping upwards. A lot of usa feel like this is the appropriate time and is absolutely necessary, considering it's evident our adults take been failing us all this fourth dimension in terms of laws and policies.
I was shocked and scared when I saw what happened in Parkland. If it can happen at Parkland, it can happen anywhere, even where I go to school. For a lot of adults, guns are so political. An automatic brick wall comes down when yous effort to talk about them. Only a lot of students feel like this isn't about politics. Many adults think it'south a bad matter that a lot of our work, activism, and opinions in general are driven past our emotions. They dismiss us as emotional. Just I think when it comes to policy changing and making laws, a part of information technology should be driven past emotion. We should exist caring about the people nosotros're talking nigh. I feel like a lot of adults think that we're tryna stay in the by, and not move frontwards, but honestly, we're only working to respect the lives lost. An activist does something. Anything. All of u.s. are just teenagers fed up with this situation. Whether information technology'south using social media or coming together with local authorities representatives, we're making change.
